Building New Central Maui School

As Central Maui grows, so does the need for modern, high-quality school infrastructure. In response, the Hawai‘i State Legislature tasked SFA with leading the development of a new public school campus on 26.2 acres in Waikapū Country Town. Once completed, the campus will be turned over to the Hawai‘i Department of Education (HIDOE) to operate and serve the community.

The Challenge

Central Maui is experiencing rapid growth, driven by new housing developments and families relocating from wildfire-impacted areas. Crowded classrooms, limited resources, and long travel times are becoming the norm. Without new infrastructure, the region risks falling further behind in meeting the needs of its students.

The Solution

Built for the next generation, the new Central Maui campus can potentially support up to 1,650 students. The campus provides a long-term solution to accommodate the future of education. Inspired by the meaning of Waikapū—“waters of the conch”—the school is designed as a place of connection, just as Waikapū once brought together Māʻalaea Bay fishers and Kahālāwai farmers.

A Community-Inspired School

Local cultural values and Maui perspectives are critical to the development of the new central Maui School. A number of Maui-based organizations are sharing their expertise to create a project that Maui can be proud of, including the Mo‘olelo Group, Hawai‘i Off Grid, architecture and engineering firm in Haʻikū, and R.T. Tanaka Engineers, Inc., civil engineering firm in Wailuku.
