Jan Iwase | Board Chairperson

Early childhood educator and Hawaiʻi Department of Education (HIDOE) teacher and principal with 45 years of experience. Partnered with Department of Defense Education Activity and HIDOE on a $33.2 million grant to upgrade school facilities to reflect 21st century priorities and authored two books, Leading with Aloha and Educating with Aloha.

Damien Kim| Board Vice-Chairperson

Trades and labor union leader with current positions at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1186, Hawaii Building and Construction Trades Council, and Hawaii State AFL-CIO. Current and past community leadership positions include former chair of the Honolulu Authority on Rapid Transit, chair of Adult Friends for Youth, and chair of Waipahu High School Academy of Industrial and Engineering Technology Advisory Board.

Robert Davis | Member

Former HawaiÊ»i Department of Education Complex Area Superintendent for the Leilehua-Mililani-Waialua Complex Area and Principal of Ka‘ala Elementary School with over 30 years of experience.  Focused on student-centered leadership and educational policy development.

Shellie Paiva | Member

Retired law enforcement professional with 27 years of experience, including nearly a decade in community policing. Proven expertise in leadership, strategic planning, policy development, and interagency collaboration. Extensive experience in public engagement and dedicated to institutional accountability.

Michael Unebasami| Member

Emeritus associate vice president for administrative affairs for the University of Hawaiʻi Community College System with decades of leadership experience in business operations, including budget and financial management, planning and facilities management, auxiliary enterprises, human resources, and legal and legislative affairs.

Harold Edwards | Vice Chairperson 2021-2025

Former development director for HCDA, Senior Vice-President of the Development division for Molokai Properties (dba Molokai Ranch), and current President and CEO of ITC Water Management.

Logan Okita | Member (Interim) 2024-2025

Vice President of the Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association (HSTA) and elementary school teacher at Nimitz Elementary School. Formerly HSTA secretary-treasurer. Director on the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Kimo Unten | Member (Interim) 2024-2025

Nineteen years of civil engineering experience in Hawaiʻi, supporting clients ranging from government agencies to private sector clients. Fostering strong client relationships and collaborative solutions are key to his approach. Technical experience covers a wide range of projects, including entitlement support, commercial site design, roadway expansion, school improvements, master planning, and site analysis, among other project types.

Edmund Aczon | Member 2023-2024

Executive Director of the Hawaiʻi Carpenters Apprenticeship and Training Fund with extensive experience in the construction industry and recipient of numerous awards from local and national business and construction entities. Former Land Use Commissioner, serves on the Hawaii 3Rs (Repairing, Remodeling and Restoring Our Schools) Board as a director and also as the chairperson of the Technical Committee.

Alan Oshima | Chairperson 2021-2024

Bettina Mehnert | Member 2021-2024

Former President and CEO of Hawaiian Electric. Practiced law in the areas of water rights, land use, and public utility regulation. Previously involved in numerous public education initiatives such as HawaiÊ»i 3R’s and the YMCA of Honolulu.

President and CEO of AHL, a leading architectural, planning, and interior design firm in Hawaii for more than 75 years.  A licensed architect, she has led her team on a multitude of large-scale design and development projects across the state. 

L. Candy Suiso | Member 2021-2023

Retired high school educator   Founder, Searider Productions at Wai’anae High. Executive Director for Searider Productions Foundation. A strong advocate for educational equity and school facilities.

Chad “Keone” Farias | Member 2021-2022

As an educator for nearly thirty (30) years, Keone has continuously advocated for the health and wellness of children and youth. Keone also serves on the Hilo Medical Center’s East HawaiÊ»i Regional Board and has participated in various task force groups related to improving the lives of children, families, and communities.
